Ask ChatGPT which life insurer to go with in New Zealand and you won’t get ten blue links. You’ll get a short, confident answer that names a handful of brands and links to a few sources. Everyone else may as well not exist.
So how do you become one of the handful?
We wanted to offer an evidence based answer, so we tracked 72 real questions about life insurance across Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Gemini, and logged every brand mentioned, every page cited and every behind-the-scenes search ChatGPT ran.
This guide uses what we found, and the results of other recent studies, to explain what moves AI visibility, what doesn’t, and how to tell the difference. Spoiler: an llms.txt file isn’t going to help.
How do you rank in AI search?
You don’t “rank” in AI search the way you rank on Google. The same question can produce a different answer depending on who asks. It is very sensitive to context. The more realistic goal is to increase how often AI mentions you, cites you and recommends you across the questions your customers ask.
Three numbers from our study show why that’s a different game from classic SEO:
In our study Partners Life was named in 36% of AI answers, but its website was linked in only 6%. Being talked about and being cited are different things.
One Moneyhub page was cited for 31 of our 72 questions. A single, well-built page can do an enormous amount of work.
Only 18 of the 593 pages cited were cited by all three AI engines. Each engine reads from a different shortlist.
The seven how-to steps
How and what we tracked
Before we get into the how-to steps, here’s how we gathered the evidence we’ll keep coming back to. Life insurance makes a good test category: it’s a considered purchase, it’s full of jargon, and the questions people ask range from “who’s best?” to “what happens if I stop paying?”.
- Category
- New Zealand life insurance
- Questions
- 72, written the way people ask them: 27 comparison (“Who is the best life insurance company in NZ?”), 37 informational (“Do I need a medical examination to get life insurance in NZ?”) and 8 cost (“How much does life insurance usually cost per month in New Zealand?”)
- AI engines
- Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Gemini
- Brands
- 18: 12 insurers and 6 comparison or adviser sites
- When
- Ongoing. The figures in this guide are from the latest snapshot, taken on 25 September 2026.
- How we collected answers
- From each engine’s public web interface, in a fresh, logged-out incognito session for every question. We didn’t use the platforms’ APIs.
- What we logged
- Brand mentions, links to each brand’s website, every cited page (593 pages from 222 domains) and ChatGPT’s fan-out searches
Why we track with fresh incognito sessions… AI answers are even more sensitive to who’s asking than traditional search results. Chat history, saved memories, account settings and location all shape the response, so two people asking the same question are unlikely to get exactly the same answer. API responses aren’t a reliable stand-in either, because they can differ from what people see in the apps.
Running every question through the public web interface, in a clean, logged-out session, is as close as we can get to a general, de-personalised answer. Think of it as a baseline for the category, not a prediction of what any one customer will see.
Mentioned means the answer names the brand. Cited means the answer links to the brand’s own website. Overall visibility is a blended score reflecting both the brand’s mention and citation rates. Percentages are the share of all question-and-engine checks.
This is a snapshot from an ongoing study. Visibility scores have been relatively stable so far, but they may change over time. The results say nothing about the quality of anyone’s products; they simply reflect what the AI answers said. You’ll find the full data snapshot near the end of this guide.
How AI search picks an answer
It helps to know what happens in the few seconds between hitting enter and getting an answer, because nearly every tactic in this guide follows from it.
Broadly, an AI search engine does three things.
- 1
It reads the question in context
Earlier messages in the chat, and sometimes what the assistant remembers about you, shape what it thinks you’re asking. Two people asking the same thing can get different answers.
- 2
It fans out into lots of searches
Rather than running one search, it splits the question into sub-questions and searches for each. Google describes AI Mode’s “query fan-out” as “breaking down your question into subtopics and issuing a multitude of queries simultaneously” (Google).
- 3
It reads, weighs and writes
It pulls in the pages those searches return, weighs up where they agree, and writes one answer that names a few brands and cites a few pages.
Where each AI platform searches also matters. Google’s AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini of course draw on Google’s index. ChatGPT uses its own search crawler (OAI-SearchBot) alongside third-party search providers, with Bing long understood to be a major one, though they also appear to use Brave and even Google results in some circumstances. Microsoft Copilot runs on Bing. Perplexity has its own index.
So ranking well in traditional search is still important, it just isn’t the whole story.
What ChatGPT searched for in our study
ChatGPT is the only one of the three engines we tracked that provides visibility into its fan-out searches via the web UI, and they’re revealing. We can’t be sure that ChatGPT reported all fan-out queries, but it did report 88 unique fan-out queries across 36 of our 72 questions. Three things stood out.
- It localises. 91% of its fan-out searches included “NZ” or “New Zealand”, often even when the question didn’t.
- It heads straight for sources it trusts. A third of the searches (29 of 88) used a
site:search to look inside one specific website. The targets were regulators and public guides such as the FMA and Sorted, a comparison site (Moneyhub) and insurers (AIA and Partners Life). - It already has favourites. When a question didn’t name a brand, the insurers ChatGPT searched for by name were mostly AIA (11 searches), Partners Life (9) and Fidelity Life (8). They’re also the three most visible brands in the whole study. Those names were in the searches ChatGPT wrote before it had retrieved anything, so they came from what the model already “knows” from its training data.
| The question we asked | What ChatGPT searched for | What it tells us |
|---|---|---|
| Is Partners Life better than AIA for life insurance in New Zealand? | site:partnerslife.co.nz financial strength rating AM Best 2026 Partners Life | Goes to the insurer’s own site to check a fact |

| Which New Zealand life insurer has the fewest exclusions? | site:canstar.co.nz New Zealand life insurance exclusions AIA Partners Life Fidelity | Names three insurers it already knows |
| What is the difference between stepped and level life insurance premiums in NZ? | site:fma.govt.nz life insurance premiums stepped level New Zealand | Checks the regulator |
| Do I still need life insurance if I do not have children? | New Zealand life insurance who needs it dependants mortgage debts Consumer NZ | Asks for a consumer body by name |
| What is the best life insurance for someone in their 30s in New Zealand? | New Zealand life insurance 30s life cover providers Partners Life AIA Fidelity Life Cigna Southern Cross comparison | Builds its own shortlist of brands |
Two routes into an AI answer. Think of an AI assistant as a very fast researcher with a favourite set of bookmarks. Its answers draw on two things:
- Retrieval (RAG): what it finds when it searches the web right now. You influence this with crawlable, citable pages and coverage on the sites it trusts, and changes can show up within weeks.
- Training data: what the model already “knows”, which shapes what it searches for and which brands it reaches for first. Each new model is trained on more recent web content, so those built-in favourites shift from one model to the next. You influence this by building a strong, consistent, crawlable footprint across the web today.
Most of this guide is about the first route, but every step also feeds the second. The goal is to get cited in today’s answers and baked into tomorrow’s models.
Mentioned vs cited: two different goals
If you take one thing from our study, understand this: getting named in an AI answer and getting linked from one are two separate achievements. Winning both should be the ultimate goal, but typically different kinds of brands win each.
In our study we found that Insurers get talked about. Partners Life was named in 35.7% of answers, but its own site was linked in only 5.6%: more than six mentions for every link.
Meanwhile the Comparison sites get linked. Quotehub was cited in 22.5% of answers but named in just 1.9%, about twelve links for every mention. Life Covered (17.4% cited, 1.9% named) and Life Direct (14.1% cited, 0.9% named) followed the same pattern.
Why the split? AI engines lean on third-party explainers and comparison pages for their facts, then name the insurers those pages discuss. It echoes Lily Ray’s analysis of 100 “best software” queries in Google’s AI Overviews, which found that when a brand’s own listicle was cited, the brand was left out of the actual recommendation 69% of the time (Lily Ray, 2026).
So before you optimise anything, decide what you need:
- If you sell the product, you mostly want to be recommended: mentioned often, described accurately and framed positively. A link is a bonus.
- If you publish, compare or advise, you want the citation, because that’s where the click comes from.
- Either way, measure the two separately. A single “visibility” score can hide the fact that you’re quoted everywhere and recommended nowhere.
A link without a mention is a footnote. A mention without a link is word of mouth. Know which one matters most to you.

What Google says vs what the data says
From Google Search’s perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.
Google Search Central, 2026Google’s official guidance is refreshingly blunt. They’ve said publicly that you don’t need llms.txt files, special schema, content “chunking” or AI-specific rewrites to appear in its AI features. That’s all good and well, but Google only speaks for Google and they do tend to talk in absolutes when the reality is often more nuanced.
Based on our observations, here’s what we’d say about some of the common advice…
| The idea | Google says | What the data says | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Add an llms.txt file | Not needed; Google Search doesn’t use it. | We haven’t seen evidence that it changes which brands AI engines mention or cite. | Optional Cheap to add, but never ahead of the basics. |
| Add special schema markup | Not required, and there’s no special “AI schema”. | Structured data helps machines understand entities and facts, but nothing shows it’s a switch for AI answers. | Good hygiene Worth doing for SEO; not a magic lever. |
| Chop content into bite-size chunks | Unnecessary; AI understands full, multi-topic pages. | Our most-cited pages were full, well-structured guides that answer early. 44% of ChatGPT citations come from the first 30% of a page (SEL). | Structure, don’t shred Answer first, then go deep. |
| Build brand mentions | Inauthentic mentions won’t help. | Insurers’ own sites earned only 16% of citations in our study; the rest came from other people’s pages. Mentions correlate more strongly with AI visibility than backlinks do (Ahrefs). | Yes, the real kind Earn them on pages AI already trusts. |
| “All AI engines work the same way” | Speaks for Google only. | 84% of the pages cited in our study were cited by just one of the three engines. Only 3% were cited by all three. | Not true Track each engine separately. |
| “Reddit is the top source” | No position. | Reddit is among the most-cited sources in Google’s AI summaries overall (Pew). In NZ life insurance it earned about 1% of citations. | Depends Check what your category actually cites, and keep checking. |
Google is right that there are no special tricks, and the fundamentals will take you a long way. Where its guidance runs out is everything that happens off your website and outside Google, and that’s the focus of most of the work in the next seven steps.
Let the right bots in
If an AI engine can’t reach your page, it can’t cite it, and every other step in this guide is wasted effort. In our study, ChatGPT ran searches like site:aia.co.nz New Zealand life insurance medical examination underwriting and site:partnerslife.co.nz financial strength rating AM Best 2026 Partners Life in the middle of writing its answers. If either site had been blocking OpenAI’s search crawler, those searches would have come back empty and someone else’s page would have filled the gap.
Check these five things:
- Search bots vs training bots. Most AI companies run separate crawlers for search and for training their models. OpenAI, for example, uses OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search and GPTBot for training (OpenAI). You can opt out of training and still show up in search, and that’s what most publishers now do: across Cloudflare’s network, training bots are blocked far more often than answer bots (TechnologyChecker, 2026).
- Your CDN and firewall, not just robots.txt. Plenty of sites say “come on in” in robots.txt, then block AI bots at the firewall. That’s leaving the front door open and padlocking the gate.
- Content that loads without JavaScript. Vercel’s analysis found that none of the major AI crawlers rendered JavaScript (Vercel). If your prices, policy details or FAQs only appear after scripts run, AI may never see them. Try viewing your key pages with JavaScript switched off; what’s left is roughly what the bots get.
- Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow. Bing’s index powers Microsoft Copilot and feeds other AI search tools, so verify your site there and use IndexNow to push updates quickly.
- Your server logs. They show which AI bots visit, how often and what they fetch. It’s the closest you’ll get to seeing your site through the robots’ eyes.
Crawlability also feeds the second route into AI answers: training data. A site that’s hard to crawl today is less likely to shape what the next generation of models learns about your brand.
Keep winning at classic SEO
AI engines don’t invent their sources. They search, and what they find depends on search indexes. Ahrefs found that 76% of the pages cited in Google’s AI Overviews also rank in the top 10 organic results (Ahrefs), and one study found ChatGPT searched the web on 31% of prompts (Nectiv via Search Engine Land). Strong SEO is still your ticket in.
But the engines don’t all read the same shortlist. In our study, Google’s AI Overviews cited 361 different pages, while ChatGPT and Gemini cited about 170 each. ChatGPT also had its own taste: a third of the pages it cited belonged to insurers, compared with about one in seven for AI Overviews and fewer than one in ten for Gemini. It leaned harder on regulators and public guides as well.
| Google AI Overviews | Gemini | ChatGPT | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Different pages cited | 361 | 175 | 170 |
| Share on insurers’ own sites | 13.6% | 8.6% | 33.5% |
| Share on comparison, broker and adviser sites | 37.1% | 36.0% | 21.8% |
| Share on regulator and public guide sites | 3.3% | 2.3% | 9.4% |
| Share on US and overseas sites | 5.0% | 6.9% | 4.7% |
| Share on Reddit | 1.7% | 4.0% | 0.0% |
- One engine only: 498 pages (84%)
- Two engines: 77 pages (13%)
- All three engines: 18 pages (3%)
Shares are of the different pages each engine cited. Source types are our own grouping of the cited domains. Highlighted cells show the highest share in each row.
The practical upshot: keep doing good SEO for Google, make sure you’re properly indexed in Bing, and track each engine separately rather than assuming a win in one is a win in all three.
Map prompts by intent, not keywords
This is where our data gets interesting. The same brand can be a star on one kind of question and nearly invisible on another.
- AIA was visible in 87.5% of comparison answers but only 16.7% of cost answers.
- Asteron Life went from 60.3% on comparison questions to 8.9% on informational and 4.2% on cost.
- MAS barely featured in comparisons (5.0%) but came top on cost questions (31.3%).
- Informational questions had no clear winner at all. Nobody passed 23%, and a comparison site (Quotehub) led the pack.
| AIA | 49.0 | 87.5 | 19.9 | 16.7 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Partners Life | 39.3 | 75.7 | 16.1 | 12.5 |

Insurer Comparison or adviser site. Cost questions are a small group (8 questions), so treat them as indicative.
If you only tracked “best life insurance NZ”, you’d think AIA owns the category. If you only tracked cost questions, you’d put your money on MAS. Both are true, for different customers at different moments. That’s why AI search research starts with a prompt library rather than a keyword list.
Build a prompt library
A good prompt library covers the questions your customers ask at every stage, in the words they use.
- By persona: first-home buyer, young family, self-employed, nearing retirement.
- By stage: “Do I need it?”, “How does it work?”, “Who’s best?”, “How much?”.
- By intent: comparison, informational, cost and branded questions (“Is Partners Life better than AIA?”).
- In your customers’ own words: Kiwis talk about KiwiSaver, ACC and advisers. Some add “NZ” or their city and plenty don’t, so track questions exactly as people ask them.
Mine your Search Console queries, sales and support calls, “People also ask” boxes and, where you can see them, AI fan-out searches. Between 50 and 150 prompts is a sensible start for most brands.
The Excel template we use to plan and track prompts, with example prompts from this study and a summary sheet that works out your mention and citation rates by intent and engine.
Download the template (.xlsx)Build one clear answer page per big question
Remember MAS, the cost-question leader from step 3? It’s the underdog story of our study, and much of the credit goes to one page: “How much does life insurance cost?” on the MAS website was cited for seven of our questions, on all three engines. One clear answer to one big question beat brand size.
The same pattern runs through the most-cited pages. Moneyhub’s life insurance guide was cited for 31 of our 72 questions, 98 times in total. AIA’s product pages did well too, backed by the most visible brand in the study. But most of the other insurer pages that earned citations answered one specific question: Partners Life on buying direct vs through an adviser, Chubb on life insurance for single people, MAS on whether you need life insurance at all. For smaller brands especially, a page that answers one question well was the most reliable way in.

What a citable answer page looks like
- Answer first. Put the direct answer in the opening sentences, then add depth. One analysis of 18,012 ChatGPT citations found 44% came from the first 30% of a page (Search Engine Land).
- Be specific. Use real numbers, dates, examples and conditions. Dates and numbers were among the strongest predictors of a ChatGPT citation in that same analysis.
- Show your working. Say where your figures come from and when you last checked them. AI engines, like people, trust a claim they can verify.
- Use tables for comparisons. Side-by-side options are easy for an engine to lift and easy for a reader to scan.
- Publish something only you know. When AI described Life Covered, it singled out its “specific, regularly updated quote examples”. Original data, first-hand experience and expert opinion are what make your page worth citing over ten others that say the same thing.
Get onto the pages AI already trusts
Here’s a humbling number for anyone who works on a brand website. In our study, insurers’ own sites earned just 16% of the citations. The other 84% went to pages the insurers don’t own.
| Source type | Pages | Citations | Share of citations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Comparison, broker and adviser sites | 171 | 795 | 43.1% |
| Other (banks, blogs, government and more) | 254 | 452 | 24.5% |
| Insurers’ own websites | 100 | 289 | 15.7% |
| US and overseas sites | 30 | 153 | 8.3% |
| Regulators and public guides (FMA, Consumer NZ, Sorted) | 25 | 134 | 7.3% |
| 13 | 21 | 1.1% |
Source types are our own grouping of the 222 cited domains.
Comparison, broker and adviser sites took the biggest share (43%). The ten most-cited domains captured 42% of all citations between them, led by Moneyhub, Quotehub and Life Covered. Regulators and public guides such as the FMA, Consumer NZ and Sorted earned fewer links, but ChatGPT went looking for them by name. McKinsey found something similar on a much bigger scale: a brand’s own sites make up only 5 to 10% of the sources AI search references (McKinsey).
In other words, AI trusts you more when someone else says it. The job is to make sure the pages it already trusts say accurate, positive things about you.

Run a citation gap analysis
- List the pages AI cites for your priority prompts. Your tracking will give you this.
- Mark the ones that mention competitors but not you. These are your gaps.
- Work out why. An outdated comparison? A missing listing? A writer who’s never heard of you?
- Fix what you can. Update listings, offer data or expert comment, pitch reviews and correct errors.
Let your own data guide your channels, not generic advice. “Get on Reddit” appears in almost every AI search guide, yet in our latest snapshot Reddit earned about 1% of citations for NZ life insurance. For now, being covered accurately by the handful of comparison sites AI keeps coming back to matters far more in this category.
But treat that as a snapshot, not a rule. The sources AI leans on to judge consensus aren’t fixed. If a busy, well-informed Reddit thread about the best life insurers in New Zealand took off tomorrow, it could start ranking in Google and Bing and soon become a regular AI citation. That’s why tracking which pages get cited, over time, matters as much as tracking your own visibility.
Beware the listicle trap
Third-party “best of” pages get cited a lot. Life Covered’s “best life insurance companies” page alone was cited for 19 of our questions. It’s tempting to publish your own “best life insurers in NZ” list with yourself at number one. Resist the urge. As we saw earlier, your own list can get cited as a source while you’re left out of the recommendation, and Lily Ray also found that Google has demoted sites leaning heavily on self-promotional lists. You end up doing your competitors’ PR for them. Earn a spot on other people’s lists instead.
A word on cause and effect: Ahrefs’ study of 75,000 brands found branded web mentions correlate more strongly with AI Overview visibility (0.664) than referring domains do (0.295). But correlation isn’t causation. Mentions and visibility both tend to follow from being a well-known, well-regarded business. Chase mentions by being worth mentioning, not by manufacturing them.
Check how AI describes you
Being mentioned is only half the story. What does AI actually say about you? We fed every brand mention from our study back through OpenAI and asked it to summarise how each brand was positioned and what were the key attributes attributed to each brand in these mentions. The results read like brand briefs written by someone who has read the whole internet.
AIA 49% visible
New Zealand’s largest life insurer, with an AA financial strength rating and the AIA Vitality wellness programme. Claims acceptance is described as “slightly behind some competitors”.

Chubb 32% visible
Globally backed and A (Excellent) rated, with reliable claims handling and flexible options. Also underwrites Southern Cross’s life cover.
Asteron Life 27% visible
Long-standing and adviser-focused, with very high claims acceptance and strong financial ratings. Described as transitioning to the Acenda Life brand by 2027.
AA Life 27% visible
Accessible and direct, with simple applications and built-in terminal illness cover. “A standard industry option rather than a distinctive industry leader.”
Pinnacle Life 17% visible
Direct-to-consumer and fast, with some of the lowest premiums in NZ. Cover is basic and streamlined, with lower maximum limits.
Southern Cross 15% visible
A trusted big brand with direct simplicity and member discounts, but “seldom the cheapest or most customizable” and offering stepped premiums only.
MAS 14% visible
A mutual with high customer satisfaction, popular with medical professionals and “frequently cited as a Consumer NZ favorite”, with competitive premiums in some cases.
nib 6% visible
Direct and consumer-friendly, better known for health insurance value. Competitive on life cover, but not generally the cheapest.
Comparison sites Life Direct, Life Covered, Quotehub
Described as tools and guides for comparing insurers, not as insurers. Life Covered stands out for its “specific, regularly updated quote examples”.
What AI says about each brand, based on every brand mention. Summaries were generated with OpenAI and condensed by us; quoted attributes are the AI’s own words. They reflect what AI is saying, and may include out-of-date claims. Five tracked brands (Smart Insure, InsureNZ, Global Finance, Momentum Life and Foundation Life) weren’t mentioned enough to summarise.
Look at how each brand’s AI-described strength lines up with where it wins. Pinnacle Life is described as the low-premium, direct option, and it was the second most visible brand on cost questions. Partners Life, AIA and Fidelity Life are described in terms of claims records, breadth and scale, and they dominate comparison questions. MAS is described as a mutual with high customer satisfaction and “competitive premiums in some cases”, and it topped the cost questions. Your AI positioning isn’t just a vibe. It decides which questions you win.
Notice, too, how specific the AI gets. It quotes claims acceptance rates, financial strength ratings, policy features and pricing details, pulled from pages that may or may not be current. If any of that is wrong or out of date, it’s being repeated to your customers every day.
How to audit and fix your AI positioning
- Ask the questions your customers ask and read what comes back about you, across several engines and several runs.
- List every factual claim: prices, ratings, features, claims statistics, ownership and product names.
- Trace wrong or outdated claims to their source. The problem is usually on someone else’s site.
- Correct the source. Update your listings, ask publishers to refresh old comparisons, and publish the correct facts clearly on your own site.
- Keep your core facts consistent everywhere, so there’s one version of the truth for AI to find.
Measure honestly
If someone shows you a screenshot of their brand at “number one in ChatGPT”, smile politely. SparkToro’s research found there’s less than a 1 in 100 chance that AI tools give the same list of brands twice for the same prompt, and less than a 1 in 1,000 chance of the same list in the same order (SparkToro, 2026). One screenshot tells you about one person, at one moment.
What you can measure is how often you appear across a large set of questions, asked repeatedly. That’s the approach we used, and it works as a template:
- A fixed prompt library, split by intent and persona.
- Every major engine your customers use, tracked separately.
- Clean, logged-out sessions in each engine’s web interface, so personal context doesn’t skew the results.
- Repeated runs over time, so one-off wobbles average out.
- Mentions and citations reported separately, plus accuracy and sentiment.
- Every cited page logged, so you can see who’s shaping the answers.
That clean-session approach gives you a baseline, not the exact answer every customer sees. Logged-in users bring their chat history, memories and location with them, so their answers will vary around that baseline. What the baseline tells you is whether the underlying consensus about your brand is moving in the right direction.
Brand rankings in our study have been very consistent, and the most influential pages were rock solid: every one of the 50 most-cited pages was cited again each time we checked. The churn happened in the long tail, where a quarter of cited pages were new and 179 pages seen earlier had dropped out.
The pages that shaped the AI answers in our study are relatively few and stable. That may vary from industry to industry, depending on product cycles and how active third-party publishers are, and as step 5 showed, new sources can break in at any time. Keep tracking where AI draws its conclusions from so you can adjust your strategy accordingly.
Tools worth adding
- Google Search Console now has a generative AI performance report showing impressions for your pages in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country and device. It’s rolling out gradually, so not every property has it yet (Google).
- GA4 now includes an AI Assistant channel in its default channel grouping, so you can connect AI referrals to leads and revenue (Semrush).
- Realistic timelines: technical fixes can show up within weeks once crawlers revisit. Content and third-party coverage usually take a few months to shift the consensus.
What to ignore
AI search has attracted its fair share of snake oil. Feel free to skip:
- Guaranteed rankings. Nobody can promise you “#1 in ChatGPT”.
- Special AI formatting. llms.txt files, “AI schema” and rewriting everything for the robots. As the Google vs data table showed, none of it is a shortcut, and none of it makes up for thin content or blocked crawlers. Write clearly, for people.
- One-size-fits-all channel advice. Check what AI cites in your category before you pour time into Reddit, YouTube or anything else.

Your first 30 days
Feeling ready to roll up your sleeves? Here’s a sensible order of play for your first month.
- Week 1
Open the doors
Audit robots.txt, CDN and firewall rules for AI search bots. Test your key pages with JavaScript switched off. Verify Bing Webmaster Tools and set up IndexNow.
- Week 2
Get a baseline
Build a first prompt library of 50 to 100 questions. Run it across the main engines on a regular basis (at least weekly), and record mentions, citations and cited pages.
- Week 3
Fix your best answers
Pick the three questions that matter most commercially. Make sure you have a clear, specific, up-to-date answer page for each.
- Week 4
Work the consensus
List the most-cited third-party pages in your category, check what they say about you, and start correcting, updating and pitching.
Frequently asked questions
Can I rank number one in ChatGPT?
Not in the traditional SEO sense. AI system responses are highly contextual (even more so than traditional search results) so the same query from two different people can yield very different answers. What you can do is increase the frequency of your mentions, citations and recommendations across a representative set of questions, and measure that over time.
What’s the difference between being mentioned and being cited in AI search?
Mentioned means the AI names your brand in its answer. Cited means it links to your website as a source. They don’t always go together: in our NZ life insurance study, Partners Life was named in 35.7% of answers but linked in only 5.6%, while the comparison site Quotehub was linked in 22.5% but named in just 1.9%. Product brands mostly want to be recommended; publishers and comparison sites mostly want the link.
Do I need an llms.txt file to rank in AI search?
No. Google says its search doesn’t use llms.txt, and we haven’t seen evidence that it changes which brands AI engines mention or cite. It’s cheap to add, but crawler access, clear answer pages and coverage on trusted third-party sites matter far more.
Does schema markup help with AI search?
Structured data helps machines understand who you are and what you offer, and it still earns its keep in classic SEO. But Google says there’s no special schema needed for its AI features. Treat it as good hygiene, not a ranking switch.
Should I block AI crawlers?
Generally, no, unless you have strong commercial reasons for not wanting your content to make its way into training data sets or to be cited by AI platforms. Most AI companies run separate bots for search and for training: OpenAI, for example, uses OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search and GPTBot for training. Many publishers block training bots and allow search bots, which keeps them visible in AI answers. Check your CDN and firewall settings as well as robots.txt.
How long does it take to improve AI visibility?
Technical fixes can show up within weeks, once AI crawlers revisit your pages. Improving your answer pages and earning coverage on the sites AI trusts usually takes a few months. Engines that search the live web respond faster than answers drawn from a model’s training data.
Do ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews cite the same sources?
Mostly not. In our study, 84% of cited pages were cited by only one of the three engines, and just 18 of 593 pages were cited by all three. ChatGPT cited insurers’ own pages far more often than Google AI Overviews or Gemini, which leaned more on comparison sites. It pays to track each engine separately.
Is SEO dead now that AI search is here?
No, SEO is not dead. AI engines search the web to build their answers, and Ahrefs found 76% of the pages cited in Google’s AI Overviews also rank in the top 10 organic results. Good SEO is the foundation. AI search adds new work on top, mainly around intent, third-party coverage and measurement.
Want to see this data for your industry?
We can set up a similar study to track real-world prompts for your category too, and show you:
- Where you’re mentioned, and where you’re only cited (or missing)
- Which competitors AI recommends instead
- Which pages are shaping the answers
- What AI gets wrong about you, and what we’d fix first
